MissionMain

Employment is the key to sustained economic self-sufficiency.  MissionWorks's goal is to prepare, train and place low-income adults in careers that pay a family-sustaining wage, offer benefits and opportunities for advancement.  Employment-related services include career exploration, job readiness, assistance with resume development, job placement and on-going support.  MissionWorks has developed relationships with over 40 area employers including the Colleges of the Fenway and the Longwood Medical Area.  MissionWorks assists clients to obtain positions with opportunities for full time employment and advancement.

 

 

Adults

MissionWorks offers adult education classes for residents of Mission Hill and the Roxbury area. Classes are offered by MissionWorks in collaboration with Roxbury Tenants of Harvard.  Instruction is provided by X-Cel, Inc. Adult Education. Classes have open entry/open exit admission to fit the schedules of working adults; students who have been pre-tested and placed into the appropriate levels attend when they can, with no penalties for missing sessions.  There is no waitlist, and testing is done weekly. Computer Learning Center
 

The Mission Works Computer Learning Center provides computer access and training for clients of MissionWorks, as well as residents of Mission Main, Mission Hill and the surrounding neighborhood. The Center has 14 computer workstations available.  Staff is available for individualized assistance with resume writing and on-line job searching.  View computer learning center schedule.

The Center provides use of business, personal, educational and career exploration applications including:

  • MS Office 2000 Professional: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access

  • Career Development Software: Career Visions, CareerWAYS.

  • Adult Computing: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia, Compton's Interactive Bible, Family Doctor, Home & Gardens Adult Gardening, Corel Painting House System, Print Master Gold, American Greetings Create A Card.

  • Educational Applications: Mavis Beacon Typing, Adult Basic Education/on-line practice Test for Adult Basic Education, MS Office 2000 Training, Passkey Learning Systems for Adults and Youth.

  • English as a Second Language: English Now, New Dynamic English, El Corrector, Talk Now: American English, Escape to Planet Arizona.

The Center also offers basic and intermediate computer classes from the novice learning the basics of the computer to the more advanced user learning how to use a database.  The following are classes offered:

  • Computer Basics: Introduction to Windows operating system, Sign up for free web-based e-mail, Internet Access.

  • Interactive Typing.

  • Resume Workshop.

  • Introduction to Microsoft Office: How to use Word

  • Intermediate & Advanced Microsoft Office: Advanced Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Access

We work with families to identify personal, educational and career goals, then develop plans so they can reach their goals, through access to a broad range of services and programs that advance self-sufficiency, build stronger families and communities and engage participants in the resources of their city.

Elder Services

MissionWorks provides support services to older (over 64 years of age) residents of Mission Main and consumers in programs.  These services are intended to help participants maintain an active life-style and age in place.  The Staff also assists seniors with managing bill payments and access to on-going medical care. Computer Learning Center: MissionWorks’s Computer Center has 14 computer workstations, each equipped with a new computer, educational software, and Internet access. In addition to the 14 new computers located in the lab, MissionWorks has 8 other computers in surrounding offices available. These 8 computers do not have Internet access but are available for computer skills practice and other tasks not requiring Internet access. Youth are able to use the 14 lab based computers for classes and under supervision they have access to the non-connected computers on a first come first serve basis.  View program schedule.

MissionWorks has drop in after school programs for youth and operates a summer camp program.  Please contact the office for details.
